In 1528 Sultan Suleiman moved 40 Spanish Jewish families from Salonika to Rhodes. My family was among them and settled in the building that had been the Hospice of St. Catherine. They lived there for 400 years until 1944 when the building was hit by a British bomb. The British were trying to bomb German ships in the nearby harbor. Three of their bombs fell short and landed in the Jewish quarter. My grandmother, Rachel Benveniste was killed in the incident. I believe some mention of this should be made of this history.
